When we see people are facing problems, when we observe that people are suffering and having difficulties, we don't have the enough ability to help them as well as assist them. We do not have enough wisdom, even, we don't have enough power, we are not doctors, we are not psychologists, we are not healers. At present, we are not. So it's very difficult when we see other suffer from illness, suffer from obstacles, facing pain or suffer from losing something, or suffer from a loss, a death of a pet or a family. We suffer a lot and they suffer a lot. But you see, suffering is one type of energy. This is an energy that can be lost, that can be hate, even can be anger, that can be giving, that can be helping. This is just an energy and how we direct it is up to us. So at the moment we see someone that we need and we care about, or other people, a family member, our close or anyone, and they want help, our heart goes out to them and our energy put into sorry for them can be directed better. It can be directed in a form of a puja.
What is a puja? Basically, a puja is an output of your compassion for another person, another being. A puja is a belief, an action, a direct initiative to do something for someone who has a problem, who is facing difficulties, who has some kind of pain or sickness or fear.
If these people have problem and pain and suffering and difficulties, and we don't try to do something about it doesn't make us a good person, doesn't help our spiritual practice, doesn't make our minds become enlightened or open up. Do something for them is a perfect way of opening our minds up, practicing emotional generosity, expressing compassion, expressing care.
So puja is a gateway, it makes a connection to help that person. So instead of just looking at someone and saying some poor words like "Oh, poor thing, poor thing; Oh poor this, poor that", if the child is surviving from whatever reasons and they can't do well in their studies, they're going to fail and they can't move on in their studies, if we arrange a Manjushri puja for them, it is an expression of our concern and our care; as well as it has energy and it will bring bless that person.
When you do puja, it is very effective for those persons to whom you love most such as your family member, friend or a close person. Why? Any action that is preceded by or motivated by compassion or Bodhicitta has much more effect. Any action we do that is motivated by any form, any level, any amount of Bodhicitta or compassion has more power.
